Convened by the World Association of Island Studies at Jeju National University, the Jeju World Peace Academy (JWPA) was formed in 2015 under the leadership of Professor Chang Hoon Ko. The first Academy was held in August 2016 and its success paved the way for future Academies.

The aim of the JWPA is to promote the social healing of the wounds due to the Jeju 4.3 tragedy by sharing this under-told story with an international community of scholars, teachers, advocates and students. Participants in the Academy are also enriched with other under-told stories connected with peace history, the humanitarian revolution and international human rights. Profoundly connected to the Peace History of Korea, the story of the Jeju 4.3 tragedy is a story of transformation from darkness to light.
